1. Tell them what they should and shouldn't be eating. This is especially annoying when it comes from someone who doesn't have good health habits. My BMI is 22, which is considered normal. I am not the healthiest eater but I try to eat somewhat healthfully, and what I do eat I eat in the correct portions. So when someone who is overweight tries to tell me that I shouldn't be eating something, to say it is irritating is an understatement.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT TYPE 1 DIABETICS: that we can't eat sugar
that is so dumb. juz sayin
2. do anything when their sugar is low. If you have a diabetic in your life, chances are you know you don't want to be around them when their blood sugar is low. Being around a diabetic with a low blood sugar is probably worse than being with a woman in the midst of giving birth.
feeling low is one of the worst feelings; you feel dizzy, shaky, sweaty (but cold-- it's weird), and just annoyed at everyone.
SHOUT OUT TO MY FAMILY FOR DEALING WITH MY BITCHY SELF WHEN I'M LOW.
When I'm low, all I want to do is drink a gallon of juice an eat 16 doughnuts. The problem is that is what we in the diabetic world call "overcompensating". If you have too much sugar when your sugar is low, one minute you will be 40, the next minute you will be 400. So when my mom sees me overcompensating, she will say "Megs you should only have 15 grams of fast acting and wait" meanwhile I'm feeling like I'm dying.
All I want to do right now is shove everything from the refrigerator into my mouth so I will feel better and someone is telling me to STOP eating? Nigga you gotta be kidding me.
but no mom is right. they say to do 15 grams of fast acting, wait 15 minutes, and then have some type of complex carb/protein mix that has 15 grams of carbs.
but really- DOES ANYONE OUT THERE ACTUALLY DO THIS?
....I think I've followed the correct protocol once.... maybe twice, actually
anyways, cut to me rolling my eyes, ignoring, or even sometimes making rude comments to my lovely mother while I am low.
I'm sure all of you mothers of diabetic teenagers out there can relate.
what you should take away from this: you will irritate a diabetic by doing anything if you are around them when a low occurs.
so, we diabetics are sorry.
3. Question their logic on diabetes matters. When I was in grade school and high school, my mom and I would compose a letter to my teachers each year explaining that I have diabetes and that I may have to drink juice or leave the room during class depending on my BG levels. All of my teachers throughout grade school and high school have been extremely understanding, and most of my professors in college are as well....most.... Now that I am in college, I explain this to them myself after class is over on the first day.
This one econ teacher must not understand diabetes AT ALL. After the first day of class, I walked up to him and said something along the lines of, "Hi, my name is Megan and I just wanted to let you know that I am a type one diabetic. I might have to drink juice in class or even get up and leave sometime if my sugar is low. I just wanted to let you know so that if you see me drink juice that it is necessary or if you see me get up and leave it is because it is a medical necessity." This is what I said to pretty much all of my teachers, and four out of five of them said it would be no problem. But this ignorant man had the nerve to say, "Just make sure you eat before you come to class, I don't want other people to see you leave and then think its okay to do the same."
....um WHAT?! Sir, would you rather have me seizing on the floor or leaving your lecture for ten minutes?
Ignorant people make me quite angry. I don't know how this man makes it everyday, honestly. He shouldn't be teaching the future leaders or America an passing down that idiocracy (I don't think that's a word actually but you know what I mean).
So, the key is, a diabetic knows how to take care of themselves, so if you want to irritate one, suggest alternative ways for them to care for themselves!
THERE YA GO, three easy ways to irritate your diabetic friend, you're welcome.
So, that's all I have for right now, if you are a diabetic and can think of anything else, OR know a diabetic and how to really irritate them, COMMENT BELOW! I would love to hear your thoughts!
